Much of my experience of the world is *spiritual* -- and yet I don't believe in god(s), as such. I've been considering starting a tribe "Spiritual Atheist."
Then I saw the name of this tribe, and I thought, "Ooooo! That's better!" It's a public Tribe, so I hopped on. But I still don't know what it is.
What are we?
(I hope this isn't a case of "If you have to ask....")

Re: Reason for Being
Thu, April 15, 2004 - 2:03 AMWell, for me, I'm anti-theist. I believe that phenomena which people call "Gods" exist, but I'd really rather they leave me alone. I have enough connection to spirituality without needing Deities to be involved.

Tue, April 20, 2004 - 5:50 PMHave you read Gaiman's _American Gods_?
Wonderfully drawn deity-characters. I'd stay away from most of those, in real life. :) -

Re: Reason for Being
Sun, April 18, 2004 - 8:03 AMWell I started this tribe because I am an atheist and a herpetologist, and therefore, literally, an atheist snake handler, but it isn't just for literal atheist snake handlers. It is for people who don't depend on a supernatural force to protect them as they live their lives....metaphorical atheist snake handlers who take responsibility for their own actions and understand that life is risky in random and unpredictable ways...people who don't have to create some supernatural order to the universe to explain it all...well I guess that is sort of what this tribe is...of course what this tribe is will ultimately be determined by its members...what do you think this tribe is? -

Re: Reason for Being
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 3:41 AMWell I'm glad that's all cleared up. However, I am a literal snake handling atheist as well...its a beautiful thing :) -

Re: Reason for Being
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 3:44 PMA beautiful thing indeed!
Did you know that 9 out of 10 snakes surveyed prefer being handled by atheists over pentecostals.
During an interview, one snake was quoted as saying, "Pentecostal snake handlers have no respect. It's like they are being annoying on purpose, you know, daring us to bite them so their god can smite us or something. It's all very demeaning. All the snakes laugh at them when they go back to their snake pits. If we didn't need our venom for getting food, we'd probably go out of our way to bite pentecostals at every available oportunity. Unfortunately, pentecostals are just to big to swallow. Atheist snake handlers aren't like that at all. With Atheists, its usually about mutual respect and fun."
Actually I just made all that up, but if snakes could talk, I bet that's what they would say about it.

Re: Reason for Being
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 4:10 PMWhat kind of snakes do you have?
I have 2 ball pythons, and I care for several snakes at UAB. We have the following snakes for use in teaching--
4 black kingsnakes
1 Jacksonville Kingsnake
1 Red milk snake
3 Grey ratsnakes
2 Cornsnakes
1 Garter snake
3 Copperheads
2 Cottonmouths
2 Timber rattlers
It's a lot of work keeping them fed and their cages clean. We bring them around to teach people about snakes. Most are rescued from either irresponsible pet owners, road incidents, yards of people who would have killed them if we had not taken them, or just people brought them to us and left them for no apparent reason. Most are let go back in their natural habitat.

Re: Reason for Being
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 9:33 PMThats cool. I only have one snake at the moment, a Trans Pecos Rat Snake. I used to have an anerythristic striped corn as well, but a friend let it get out while i was out of town (it was only about 3 months old...). Anyway, I'd really like to get another snake. We've always had a lot of tanks, might as well put them to use :) -

Re: Reason for Being
Wed, April 21, 2004 - 7:13 PMAt one point, I had 8 red tailed boas at home. I don't recommend letting the snake habit get out of hand. Too many snakes makes for too much work and therefore less enjoyment of the snakes. I have never seen a trans pecos rat snake. Do you have a picture? (I grew up near the pecos river...maybe I saw one as a kid and didn't know it)

Subocs!
Tue, May 4, 2004 - 12:15 PMTrans-Pecos Rat Snakes are seriously cool. Wish I hadn't passed on an opportunity to pick some up a while back.
Found a page with some pictures:

Re: Subocs!
Tue, May 4, 2004 - 7:06 PMThey are beautiful. What's the story on those eyes? Any idea. Definately different from Elaphe guttata (grey rat snake), though the markings are similar. -
-
Re: Subocs!
Tue, May 4, 2004 - 7:14 PMThe googly eyes are characteristic of the genus (Bogertophis; two whole species). Presumably it's for better night vision. They were separated out from Elaphe a few years back; apparently they're more closely related to Pituophis than to Elaphe. (This is off the top of my head here, could be off on the details.) -
-
Re: Subocs!
Wed, May 5, 2004 - 5:49 AMThey look a lot more like Elaphe than Pituophis. Sometimes the molecular evidence doesn't agree with the morphological evidence though. It's probably good that they are in their own genus. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
