Much of my experience of the world is *spiritual* -- and yet I don't believe in god(s), as such. I've been considering starting a tribe "Spiritual Atheist."

Then I saw the name of this tribe, and I thought, "Ooooo! That's better!" It's a public Tribe, so I hopped on. But I still don't know what it is.

What are we?

(I hope this isn't a case of "If you have to ask....")

Naked Mole Rats

I thought I would mention these things because they fascinate me. They are hairless rats that live in South Africa in underground colonies, which sounds normal enough, but consider the following:

--They are cold-blooded mammals
--They are Eusocial (there is a queen, workers, & soldiers--they live just like bees)
--The queen is larger than the rest and maintains order by shoving her subordinates
--when a naked mole rat from a different colony comes into the nest, it is attacked and killed.
--only the queen has young
--when the queen dies, all the remaining females in the colony duke it out for the position

Now tell me that's not fascinating.

We know there is no supernatural all powerful force that will protect us from our own stupidity, yet somehow, in spite of it all, we manage to live life with gusto. Why do we do it? Do we do it for the hell of it? Hell no! We do it for fun!

Monkeys with typewriters

Richard Huxley postulated that if a monkey was left alone with a typewriter long enough, it would eventually, through random typing, produce the collected works of shakespeare. A recent experiment proved that monkeys are a little more complex than Huxley supposed. A computer was left in a primate cage. First the lead male bashed the hell out of it. After that, they all started urinating and defacating on it. Eventually (and a few computers later I imagine), the monkeys managed to produce a couple of pages of "text". It was dominated by the letter s. Hey, that's the first letter of Shakespeare's name, it's a start I suppose. I guess Monkeys don't make very good random generators.
